Born Edinburgh, son of a solicitor. Childhood polio left him lame; convalesced at Sandyknowe, Scottish Borders, where he absorbed Border history and oral tradition. Called to the bar 1792; Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire from 1799. Established as a poet by the Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802–03), The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805), and The Lady of the Lake (1810). Turned to fiction with Waverley (1814), published anonymously as 'Author of Waverley'; acknowledged authorship 1827. The subsequent Waverley Novels — including Rob Roy (1817), The Heart of Midlothian (1818), and Ivanhoe (1819) — transformed the European literary landscape. Generally regarded as the inventor of the historical novel. Died Abbotsford, 21 September 1832; buried Dryburgh Abbey.
