Born Selkirk, eldest son of the town clerk. Educated at Edinburgh Academy, the University of St Andrews, and Balliol College, Oxford (first in Classical Moderations); fellow of Merton College. Settled in London as journalist, critic, and man of letters; literary editor, Longman's Magazine. Prolific author across folklore, anthropology, mythology, Scottish history, and literary criticism. Best known for his edited fairy book series and for Custom and Myth (1884) and Myth, Ritual and Religion (1887). Elected Fellow of the British Academy 1906. Distant cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. Died Banchory, 20 July 1912; buried St Andrews.
Connection to S.R. Crockett: Among the most influential literary critics writing on Scottish fiction in the 1890s. Crockett often stayed with him in St Andrews during 1893 and 94. Acted as mentor to Crockett on medieval historical matters. Supported Crockett over plagiarism claims. He was known by Maisie (Sweetheart) as ‘Mr Sagaman’.
