Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery and 1st Earl of Midlothian. Born London, 7 May 1847; father died 1851, succeeded his grandfather to the earldom in 1868, inheriting extensive Scottish estates in Midlothian including Dalmeny House and Barnbougle Castle. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, which he left without a degree. Liberal politician; never sat in the House of Commons. Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office with responsibility for Scottish affairs, 1881–83; Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's third and fourth ministries; first Chairman of the London County Council, 1889; Prime Minister, 5 March 1894 – 22 June 1895, succeeding Gladstone. Resigned the Liberal Party leadership in 1896. Subsequently a writer of literary and political biography. Married 1878 Hannah de Rothschild; she died 1890. His horse Ladas won the Derby in 1894; further Derby victories in 1895 and 1905. Died Epsom, Surrey, 21 May 1929.
