Description

Review of three novels by S.R. Crockett (T. Fisher Unwin, 1894): The Raiders, Mad Sir Uchtred of the Hills, and The Lilac Sunbonnet. Assesses The Raiders as superior to The Lilac Sunbonnet in style and narrative flow, and dismisses Mad Sir Uchtred as an historical impertinence. Includes a charge of plagiarism regarding the chapter 'The Cuif before the Session' in The Lilac Sunbonnet, alleged to derive from Dugald Graham's chapbook 'Jockey and Maggy's Courtship, Part III' (1779, reprinted 1883). Compares Crockett throughout with Barrie and Stevenson.
