Crockett spent five summers at St Andrews \u2014 playing golf, writing novels, managing a complex literary career, and corresponding with a cast of figures that included a former Prime Minister, an American impresario, an Open Champion, and Old Tom Morris himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article explores thirty-nine surviving letters from those years through three analytical lenses: the contribution of AI-assisted archival methods to chronological and network analysis; the literary and cultural connections visible in the correspondence, from Andrew Lang to Lord Rosebery to the question of a lost Whistler portrait; and the physical reality of a body living at full stretch, from nervous exhaustion and a bicycle injury to the surgery of 1899 that revealed a semi-cancerous growth on the jaw, traced back to a golf-ball strike on the links. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together the letters present a Crockett more cosmopolitan, more socially mobile, and more medically vulnerable than popular memory allows \u2014 and offer a model for what rigorous, evidence-based archive research, conducted in collaboration with AI tools, can reveal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An article from the Reading Room of the S.R.
