Crockett one of the most talked-about writers in Britain, Leisure Hour magazine published \u2018Galloway Fastnesses\u2019 \u2014 a guided excursion into the high wilderness above Glen Trool that stands as one of the finest pieces of Galloway landscape prose ever written. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This close reading examines the article in full: its architectural journey inward from Loch Trool to the remote plateau of Loch Enoch; its celebrated guide, the documented shepherd John Macmillan of Glenhead; its fusion of geological knowledge, conservation polemic, Covenanting history, and near-devotional conclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article explores how \u2018Galloway Fastnesses\u2019 creates a doubled imaginative landscape for readers who had followed <em>The Raiders<\/em> through the same geography that spring, and analyses the precise code-switching between literary English and Scots dialect that distinguishes Crockett\u2019s method throughout. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarkable closing sentence \u2014 theologically audacious in a family periodical \u2014 is examined in detail.
