\u2018The Goodman of Ballangiech\u2019 was published once, in The Lady\u2019s Realm<\/em> in December 1898, and never collected into a volume. This article argues that it rewards the kind of sustained close attention that book publication would normally invite. Setting aside the questions of tradition and plagiarism addressed in companion articles, this piece reads the story on its own terms \u2014 attending to what S.R. Crockett actually does on the page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five chapter titles are examined as a carefully engineered system of Scots humour; the illustration captions, far from decorative, are shown to actively manage the reader\u2019s knowledge relative to the characters\u2019 ignorance. The article then traces Crockett\u2019s differentiation of characters through distinct registers of Scots dialect: Andro Kennedy\u2019s biblical-legal Scots, Elspeth Kennedy\u2019s warm domestic vernacular, Alison\u2019s pointed near-standard English, and the disguised king\u2019s careful performance of a poulterer\u2019s voice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most demanding technical achievement \u2014 the sustained co-existence of a genuinely tense plot and a genuinely funny domestic register \u2014 is examined in detail, alongside the story\u2019s place in the broader tradition of disguised-ruler narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
