The “Kailyard” label that has defined \u2014 and diminished \u2014 Scottish regional fiction since 1895 did not appear from nowhere. Six months before J.H. Millar’s famous grouping of Crockett, Barrie, and Ian Maclaren in the New Review, a traceable critical campaign was already in operation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article examines the plagiarism accusations levelled at S.R. Crockett in the autumn of 1894 \u2014 circulated across the Glasgow Herald, the Literary World, and the Academy \u2014 and the correspondence that reveals their likely orchestration. Drawing on Crockett’s own letters to his publisher T. Fisher Unwin, the Academy exchange with critic William Wallace, and W. Robertson Nicoll’s corroborating testimony, this analysis shows how an unverified charge was amplified through interconnected periodical networks to question whether a working-class Free Kirk minister from Galloway could be a genuinely original writer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crockett’s methodical, well-sourced responses \u2014 including a devastating parallel with Walter Scott \u2014 demonstrate a literary intelligence that met his critics on their own ground, and bettered them.
