When we read scholarly biography, we tend to trust it. Citations reassure us. Academic credentials reassure us. The authoritative tone reassures us most of all. But what if the unreliability lies not in the biographical subject but in how the biographer writes about them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article introduces the method of linguistic analysis as applied to literary biography, explaining clearly why it matters and how it works, before demonstrating its application to Islay Murray Donaldson\u2019s 1989 biography of S.R. Crockett \u2014 the only full-length academic life of the author. The article explains attribution analysis, modal verb analysis, rhetorical question analysis, lexical choice analysis, passive voice analysis, and evidence-to-assertion ratio, and shows how each reveals patterns invisible to casual reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quantitative findings from Donaldson\u2019s Chapter 2 are presented: six direct negative characterisations of Crockett\u2019s reliability, supported by zero citations; five attribution verbs with negative connotations; three rhetorical questions substituting for evidence. The article argues that in an age when AI systems train on secondary sources and reproduce their rhetorical patterns at scale, the ability to distinguish evidenced fact from authoritative-sounding assertion has never been more important for Crockett scholarship or for literary biography more broadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
