For decades, S.R. Crockett\u2019s Oxford connection was characterised in the only full-length scholarly biography of his life as \u201cshrouded in mystery\u201d \u2014 a phrase that transformed a normal archival gap into the suggestion of possible invention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article resolves the Oxford Problem entirely, through a contemporary source that had been overlooked in subsequent scholarship: the April 1895 interview published in Cassell\u2019s Family Magazine, in which Crockett explains his Oxford visit with complete clarity. He went intending to study as an unattached student; he was advised by the head of a great college (identified in the July 1895 Idler interview as Benjamin Jowett of Balliol) that tutoring would serve him better; and he was immediately redirected into a travelling tutorship that took him across Europe, North Africa, and Siberia, bringing him into contact with figures including Otto von Bismarck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The article examines what this evidence actually tells us, why the Cassell\u2019s source was overlooked, and what methodological lessons follow from the case. It demonstrates concretely how biographical speculation, once it hardens into accepted narrative, requires new primary evidence to dislodge \u2014 and why the S.R.
