Crockett published a penny pamphlet that reveals an already accomplished literary artist. &#8220;How to Discourage Your Minister&#8221; (Edinburgh: Gall &amp; Inglis, 1890), written during his ministry at Penicuik Free Church, deploys sustained dramatic irony, sharp social satire, vivid characterisation, extended metaphor, and acute psychological insight to critique damaging congregational behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far from the sentimental piety associated with the \u201cKailyard\u201d label subsequently applied to Crockett\u2019s fiction, this early pamphlet demonstrates a writer working in the tradition of Swift \u2014 diagnostic, challenging, and unflinching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article argues that the literary techniques visible in the pamphlet \u2014 ironic detachment, comic vision, psychological realism, and the reformer\u2019s edge \u2014 are precisely those that distinguish Crockett\u2019s later fiction, and that his artistic voice was formed not after but within his ministerial career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read alongside <em>The Stickit Minister <\/em>(1893), the pamphlet reframes the conventional narrative of Crockett\u2019s literary development and offers further evidence against the Kailyard characterisation of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>An article from the Reading Room of the S.R.
