Saint Lucy: Four Voices

‘Saint Lucy of the Eyes’ (Bog Myrtle and Peat, 1895) moves across four distinct narrative registers — lyric-meditative, comic-deflating, essayistic-discursive, and vernacular-oral — held together by one retrospective narrator, Stephen Douglas of Culsharg. Drawing on travels from the early 1880s, a decade before The Stickit Minister made Crockett’s name, this article argues the story shows a command of structure and style that the standard account of his career has not credited.
